Ordering the wrong thread size can stall a whole shipment. That is why buyers keep searching for a reliable PG gland size chart. In this guide, we list every PG size from PG7 to PG48, compare PG with metric threads, and explain how to choose the right gland. Volt Metal Industries has made brass cable glands in Jamnagar, India, since 1987.

What Is a PG Gland?

A PG gland is a cable gland with a PG thread. PG stands for Panzergewinde, a German steel conduit thread defined in DIN 40430. It has an 80° flank angle and a shallow profile, so it suits thin enclosure walls.

Metric threads (M-series) replaced PG in most new European designs from the early 2000s. However, PG glands are still widely used in existing panels, machines, and replacement work. As a result, importers and distributors still need steady stock of both types.

PG Gland Size Chart: Thread Sizes and Pitch

The table below shows the standard PG thread dimensions, plus the metric size buyers most often use as a replacement.

Thread data follows DIN 40430 (PG thread reference). Always confirm the clamping range with your supplier, because it varies by gland design and seal.

PG vs Metric Cable Glands: Thread Conversion Guide

PG and metric threads are not interchangeable. Metric glands use a 1.5 mm pitch and a 60° flank angle. PG pitch and angle are different, so forcing one into the other damages the thread and weakens the seal.

Therefore, follow three simple rules when converting:

• Match the gland thread to the tapped hole or entry in the enclosure.
• Use the “nearest metric size” only when you can re-drill or re-tap the entry.
• Where the entry must stay PG, use a reducer or adaptor instead of a mismatched gland.

For example, Volt’s metric glands clamp 6-12 mm cable at M20, 11-15.5 mm at M25, and 14-20.5 mm at M32. You can read more about Panzergewinde history and why the change happened.

How to Choose the Right PG Gland Size

First, measure the cable’s outer diameter (OD). Next, pick a gland whose clamping range covers that OD, ideally near the middle of the range. Then check the entry thread on the enclosure or junction box, and match it against the PG gland size chart above.

After that, consider the site. Indoor dry panels need less sealing than outdoor or wash-down areas. Our cable gland size guide explains how cable size links to gland size in more detail.

Brass PG Glands from Volt

Volt makes PG and metric glands in nickel-plated brass. Our range covers PG7 to PG48 and M12 to M63, for unarmoured cables. Each gland comes with a nitrile gasket, polyamide insert, and O-ring for a firm, sealed grip.

Our facility uses CNC machining, in-house plating, and inspection-based quality control. We are an ISO-certified manufacturer, and Volt supplies Material Test Certificates (MTC) with orders. We also produce glands to customer drawings, threads and finishes for OEM and private-label buyers.

Matching Cable Gland Accessories

A correct gland still needs the right accessories to work well. Lock nuts hold the gland firmly on the panel wall. Serrated washers stop it from loosening under vibration. Reducer bushes and reducers/enlargers let you fit a gland into a larger or smaller entry. Stopping plugs seal unused holes. Volt supplies all of these, so you can order glands and cable gland accessories together.

FAQ

1. What does PG mean on a cable gland? PG stands for Panzergewinde, a German steel conduit thread standard (DIN 40430).
2. How do I read a PG gland size chart? Find your entry thread in the first column, then check the outer diameter, pitch, and nearest metric size.
3. Can I use a metric gland in a PG hole? No. The pitch and thread angle differ, so the thread will not seal properly.
4. Is PG13.5 the same as M20? They are close in size but not the same thread. Re-tap the hole or use an adaptor.
