Imported panels, local glands and mixed thread standards often meet on the same project. As a result, contractors and distributors need a quick fix that still seals properly. Cable gland thread conversion solves this problem. It uses a small brass fitting to join a gland with one thread to an entry with another thread or size. In this guide, we explain the thread types, the fittings that convert them and how to order the right parts in bulk.

What Is Cable Gland Thread Conversion?

Cable gland thread conversion means changing the thread type or the thread size between a gland and an equipment entry. For example, a panel may have an M25 hole, while your stock glands are PG or NPT. Instead of re-drilling the panel, you fit a converter. The gland then screws into the converter, and the converter screws into the enclosure.

This saves time on site. It also lets distributors serve mixed markets without holding every gland in every thread.

Common Cable Gland Thread Types

Before choosing a converter, identify both threads. Four families appear most often:

• Metric (M-series): Written as diameter x pitch, such as M20 x 1.5. Cable glands mostly use the 1.5 mm fine pitch. See the ISO metric screw thread basics.
• PG: An older German conduit thread with a flatter profile. Our PG gland size chart lists each size.
• NPT: A tapered American thread. Its diameter changes 1 in 16 along the length, so the threads wedge to seal. Learn more about National Pipe Thread.
• BSP / BSC: British parallel threads, still common on older equipment in India, Africa and the Middle East.

Parallel threads (metric, PG, BSP) do not seal on their own. Therefore, they need a washer or O-ring at the face.

Adaptors, Reducers and Enlargers: Which One You Need

Three fittings handle most cable gland thread conversion jobs:

A reducer bush is a compact reducer with a hex or flange. It suits thin panel walls. Always match the male thread to the entry and the female thread to the gland.

How to Choose the Right Cable Gland Thread Conversion Fitting

First, check the entry thread with a gauge, not by eye. M20 and PG13.5 look similar but do not interchange. Next, confirm the gland’s thread and size. Then, select the fitting type from the table above.

After that, check the thread length. The fitting should engage enough threads in the wall or enclosure. Finally, match the material and finish. Brass or nickel-plated brass suits most indoor and outdoor jobs and matches brass glands.

For hazardous areas, be careful. Adaptors there must meet the same protection rules as the enclosure. Therefore, always check your project’s specification and the equipment documents before fitting one.

Sealing and Cable Gland Accessories for Converted Entries

A converted entry adds one more joint, so sealing matters. Fit a sealing washer or O-ring on parallel threads to keep out dust and water. Add a lock nut on clearance holes and a serrated washer for earth continuity. An earth tag connects the armour to the earth system. Stopping plugs close unused entries, and PVC shrouds protect BW and CW glands from moisture. Our guide to cable gland accessories covers each part. Poor sealing is a common reason why cable glands fail.

Bulk and OEM Thread Conversion Parts from Volt

Volt Metal Industries has manufactured brass cable glands and accessories in Jamnagar, India, since 1987. For cable gland thread conversion, we supply reducers, enlargers, reducer bushes and adaptors in natural brass or nickel-plated brass. Our CNC machining, in-house plating and inspection-based quality control keep threads accurate batch after batch. In addition, we can produce special thread combinations to your drawing or sample. Volt is an ISO-certified manufacturer and supplies Material Test Certificates with orders.

FAQ

1. Can I convert PG to metric? Yes. A PG-to-metric adaptor lets a metric gland fit a PG entry.
2. Is a reducer the same as a reducer bush? Mostly. A reducer bush is a short, compact reducer for thin walls.
3. Do NPT adaptors need sealing? NPT threads seal by taper, but thread sealant usually helps.
4. Can Volt make custom thread combinations? Yes. We machine converters to your drawing for bulk orders.

Conclusion

Cable gland thread conversion keeps projects moving when threads do not match. Choose the right adaptor, reducer or enlarger, and seal it properly. For bulk or OEM orders, contact Volt at info@voltmetalind.com, call or WhatsApp +91 8000222233. Visit www.voltmetalind.com to request a quote.
